Our first squares!!

Second class just over and I am SO impressed with everyone! Almost all of our first squares are done and everyone is well on their way into the second square. Such pretty colors, too. Good job, ladies!

Hi all!
I have had to go up to a size 8 on the Ginette Belanger square from the size 7 I started with in class. I have only had to rip out once which is amazing compared to the first square. It reminds me of raising children. The first is so hard (and Matt was a really easy baby) because I had no clue what I was doing and the second was a lot easier!

Beth,
I am blocking my first square and am realizing that the bind off was way too tight and I think reducing stitches toward the top made the ribbing edges shrink in as well. I wondered if I were to let it dry, and then rip it out (AGAIN) and redo the ribbing by reducing my stitches on the first row and then binding off on a size larger needle. Will I need to reblock the square again? The stretching around the cable looks better once it was blocked!!

Jan,
You can try letting it dry and ripping it out and trying again. I have never done that but as long as it hasn't felted much, it probably will work. You may be surprised after it dries that it might be just fine without redoing it. Donna said the other night at class that this is a common problem and that you have to either really do a loose bind off or go up 1 or 2 needle sizes when you do your bind off. I don't think you would have to reblock after you redo your bind off. Good luck.

Hi again!
I thought I would pass along "What I learned" after ripping out my ribbing and bind off after blocking. This is my first experience with that. The yarn looks like it had a perm after ripping out and when I redid it the new looks like it hasn't been blocked and the rest does. I had let it soak the full 30" the first time. I am in the process of soaking it again and hopefully it will turn out!! I did go up a size in the needles to bind off and think I will go up two next time. I was afraid I might run out of yarn since it was so kinky. I wonder what would have happened if I would have steamed the yarn a little before reknitting it? Anyway, thought I would share in case anyone else decided to redo theirs. Jan
